Our History
The Natural Health Centre was established in 2009 by Dr. Colette Szalay as both practitioner and part-owner. Originally from Toronto, she practiced chiropractic in Peterborough for 7 years before relocating to Barry’s Bay and was drawn to the region through family ties and a desire for a slower, more balanced lifestyle to raise her young son. Inspired by both her professional experience and personal philosophy, she saw the potential to build something meaningful and needed in the community.
Originally built in 1938, the property was quite dated and in dire need of upgrades to bring the residential building up to commercial standards. Renovations were done in 2 phases – the first modernized the main floor and expanded it to 6 rooms, and the second phase a few years later of the lower basement level added 5 additional rooms and a main reception area. Over the years the Natural Health Centre has provided a welcoming space for the community with a variety of healthcare and social services all in one facility. Today the Centre is fully wheelchair accessible with on-site parking and well over a dozen caring professionals.
Dr. Szalay continues to practice part-time providing chiropractic care and Bowen fascia release to her patients, and spends her remaining time overseeing the clinic’s operations . She remains committed to supporting the Centre’s growth and ensuring it runs smoothly in its day-to-day operations. The Centre is a trusted resource for the Madawaska Valley community and visiting cottagers and tourists alike.

Our Philosophy
The Natural Health Centre was founded on a vision of creating a collaborative space where people could access natural and alternative health services all under one roof. This vision reflects the belief in the body’s innate capacity for healing and the importance of supporting physical, mental, and emotional well-being through integrative health and preventative care.
As interest in natural and holistic medicine continues to grow, the Centre supports people of all ages and conditions, as well as those living from a mindset of prevention and taking a proactive approach to their health. Welcome to the best version of yourself!
